Ben Reyer
Artist Ben Reyer is best known for his socially critical collages, which are peppered with excerpts from Western popular, advertising and print media. So it can be an angel hugging a cigarette or the Marlboro Man going out to dine at MC Donalds. Most of his work is underpinned with a good dose of humor, not least to facilitate the enjoyment of criticism.
It is no different with his borrowings of well-known logo variations. The red-and-white “Kranke Zeiten” graphic is a remixed appropriation, elevated to new levels of contextual meaning, of the copied stylistics of the logos of dominant news media – the graphic aesthetics can easily be recalled from Life magazine or the German Bild Zeitung.
